Custom Tags
Creating and Deploying Custom Tags for Specific Events
One of the standout features of the GTM Assistant app is its flexibility in allowing you to create and deploy custom tags for specific events on your Shopify store. Custom tags enable you to track unique customer interactions that may not be covered by standard tags, such as clicks on specific buttons, form submissions, or engagement with particular page elements.
Here’s how to create and deploy custom tags for specific events using GTM Assistant:
Step 1: Access the Custom Tag Setup in GTM Assistant
- Open your Shopify admin panel and navigate to Apps.
- Select GTM Assistant to open the app’s dashboard.
- Go to the Custom Tags or Advanced Tracking section within the dashboard.
Step 2: Define Your Custom Event
Custom events are actions you want to track that are specific to your store. Examples include:
- Tracking clicks on “Add to Wishlist” buttons.
- Monitoring form submissions for contact or subscription forms.
- Tracking engagement with banners, product recommendations, or other page elements.
In the Custom Tags section, click on Create New Custom Tag.
- Enter a name for your tag that describes the event you’re tracking (e.g., “Add to Wishlist Click” or “Subscription Form Submit”).
- Select the event type you want to track, such as clicks, form submissions, or pageviews.
Tip: Naming your custom tags descriptively will make it easier to identify them in reports and analytics.
Step 3: Configure the Trigger for Your Custom Tag
Triggers tell GTM Assistant when to fire a specific tag based on user actions. For each custom tag, you’ll need to set a trigger to define when it should be activated.
- Select Add Trigger in the tag creation window.
- Choose the type of interaction you want to track. Options may include:
- Click Trigger: Tracks when a user clicks a specific button or link.
- Form Submission Trigger: Tracks when a form is submitted.
- Pageview Trigger: Tracks visits to a particular page.
- Customize the trigger based on your requirements. For example, if you’re tracking a button click, specify the button’s CSS selector or element ID.
Example: To track clicks on a specific button, you might set the trigger to activate when any element with the CSS class “.wishlist-button” is clicked.
Step 4: Map the Custom Tag to an Analytics Platform
Once the custom tag and trigger are set up, you need to decide where this data should be sent. GTM Assistant supports several platforms, such as Google Analytics and Meta Pixel.
- In the Tag Destination section, select the platform(s) where you want to send this custom event data.
- If you’re using Google Analytics, select the GA4 Event option and enter an Event Name (e.g., “wishlist_click”).
- Click Save to complete the configuration.
Tip: Consistently naming events across platforms makes it easier to track and analyze data.
Step 5: Test and Publish Your Custom Tag
Before finalizing the custom tag, it’s essential to test it to ensure accuracy:
- Go to Preview Mode in GTM Assistant to enter testing mode.
- Open your Shopify store in a new tab and perform the action you’ve set up (e.g., clicking the “Add to Wishlist” button).
- Check GTM Assistant’s preview panel to confirm that the custom tag fires correctly.
Troubleshooting Tip: If the tag doesn’t fire as expected, double-check the trigger configuration and ensure that the correct CSS selector or element ID has been used.
Once you’re satisfied with the test results, go back to GTM Assistant and Publish the custom tag to make it live on your store.
